Decentralised Heating Energy Centre

Highly efficient new energy centre provides consistent and cost-effective supply

Services/ Systems installed:

  • New energy centre providing decentralised heating
  • Hot water boilers
  • 5,600,000 litre thermal storage tank
  • Heating infrastructure and pipework

Scope of our work:

This project saw the CambridgeHOK team successful deliver a highly efficient and dynamic energy system fit for the 21st Century, for our client in the Tees Valley.

The client had previously taken its heat and CO2 for its glasshouses from nearby factories - a system that was increasingly unreliable and resulting in lost revenue, disenfranchised supply chain customers and reduced profitability.

Charlotte Penn, business development manager at CambridgeHOK, explains.

“It was paramount for our client to have a system which provided a consistent and cost-effective heat source, all year round.

“Our highly-skilled and experienced in house engineers designed and installed a system which included two 9.3MW hot water boilers to assist through the winter period and two new 3.3MWe Jenbacher Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engines.

“The operating efficiency was further optimised by a 5,600,000 litre thermal storage tank.”

The site wide infrastructure was transformed with 5kms of HV cabling laid, CO2 pipework, district heating pipework and a portal frame extension. All work was carried out without interrupting the 24/7 operations of the customer.

The Results

The new energy centre offers a decentralised solution providing heat and CO2 to the glasshouse. Added to that, the system supplies the equivalent of 4,000 local homes with electricity and has been doing since October 2016.

This project highlighted our company’s ability to build partnerships and was a fine example of teamwork between ourselves, the sub-contractors and our client by working together to stay on course and within budget.

Once again, we delivered a highly successful project of which we are extremely proud.
